Hogan’s Alley Society
The Hogan’s Alley Society (HAS) is a non-profit organization committed to highlighting the presence of Black history in Vancouver and throughout British Columbia. HAS adopts a research-driven approach to community development that seeks to preserve and promote the historical, cultural, societal, and economic contributions made by Black Settlers and their descendants to Vancouver, Greater Vancouver, the Province of British Columbia, the Pacific Northwest, and Canada.

Understand Black Stories – 45 free films to stream from Cineplex
Cineplex has made 45 titles by Black creators or about Black lives free to stream in Canada: “In a time when many are turning to movies to become informed and empowered, we want to help. This collection of important films was curated to elevate Black stories, artists and filmmakers and spark discussion. These films are available to view at no cost.” You must sign up for an account, then you can rent the titles for $0.
Schomburg Center Black Liberation Reading List
For 95 years, the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture has preserved, protected, and fostered a greater understanding of the Black experience through its collections, exhibitions, programs, and scholarship. In response to the uprisings across the globe demanding justice for Black lives, the Schomburg Center has created a Black Liberation Reading List. The 95 titles on the list represent books we and the public turn to regularly as activists, students, archivists, and curators, with a particular focus on books by Black authors and those whose papers we steward.
Most of the #Schomburg95 books are available digitally for free via The New York Public Library’s SimplyE e-reader app on iOS and Android. Many are also available from the Schomburg Shop, along with a dedicated array of books and materials chronicling global Black culture.
Black Lives Matter
#BlackLivesMatter was founded in 2013 in response to the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer. It is now an international human rights movement originating from within the African American community, which campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards Black people.
