Raffi, Michelle Good, Kelly Yang, and Harry Manx to grace the [digital] stage
West Vancouver, B.C.—Award-winning authors and musicians take the stage during the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation’s free and online Signature Series, bringing the best in books and music to your screen November 13 – 19.
Cree author Michelle Good kicks off the Signature Series on Saturday, November 13, from 2 – 3:30 p.m. during Michelle Good in Conversation with Waubgeshig Rice (Facebook). Author and journalist Waubgeshig Rice will discuss Michelle’s book Five Little Indians, which tells the story of five Indigenous teens trying to survive in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside after leaving a church-run residential school.
On Tuesday, November 16, literature lovers and beluga grads of all ages are invited to join In Conversation with Kelly Yang (Facebook) from 1:30 – 2:15 p.m., followed by In Conversation with Raffi (Facebook) from 6 – 6:45 p.m. Yang and Raffi will both appear in conversation with WVML’s Acting Head of Youth Services, Patricia Lesku. Audience members are invited to send their questions for the authors in advance to youth@westvanlibrary.ca for a chance to win gift cards to KidsBooks.
“To meet a Kelly Yang reader is to meet a Kelly Yang superfan” enthuses Patricia. “Yang’s main character Mia is the kind of hero we all need: questioning, bold, optimistic, and proactive.” Both authors share a passion for creating a better world for all of us. “Raffi has dedicated his life to honouring children and is a committed environmentalist, producer, and author,” explain Patricia, “while Yang writes about important issues and how middle graders can make a difference, tackling concepts like racism, immigration, gentrification, and consent.”
Wrapping up the week on Friday, November 19 from 7:30 – 8:45 p.m. is Harry Manx in Concert (Facebook). Music lovers will be delighted by Manx’s eclectic style which wed the tradition of Blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas.
All events can be streamed for free through the WVML’s Youtube channel. Events will be available to view online 30 days after each event.
