Marking Remembrance Day at the Library

Founded as a living war memorial in 1950, the Library has always been more than just a place for books—it symbolizes remembrance, learning, and hope for the future.

In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, the community is invited to participate in a series of events designed to honour the sacrifices made by those who served. From creating valentines for veterans to discovering the untold stories of North Shore local heroes, everyone will have a chance to engage in this commemoration.

Upcoming events

Bomber Command: Churchill’s Greatest Triumph With Roddy MacKenzie
Thursday, November 7, 6 – 7:30 p.m.
Local author Roddy MacKenzie shares the remarkable story of Bomber Command and its crucial role in the Second World War, drawing inspiration from his father’s service. Discover how Bomber Command’s efforts contributed to the Allied victory. Books will be available for purchase at the event.

Movie Matinée: 1917
Saturday, November 9 , 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.
April 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.

Remembrance Day Ceremony & Reception
Monday, November 11, 10:45 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Join us at the Cenotaph in Memorial Park for a solemn Remembrance Day ceremony. Following the ceremony, visit the Library for a reception hosted by the Friends of the Library, with refreshments and live music from the Dundarave Players.

Valentines for Veterans | All Ages
Monday, November 11, 1 – 5 p.m.
After the ceremony, visit the Library to create valentines for veterans in long-term care. This simple, thoughtful activity offers a meaningful way for families and individuals to express appreciation for those who served.

Resources

Alongside these events, the Library will be open on Remembrance Day following the ceremony and reception from 1 to 5 p.m. The Research to Remember project will be on display, highlighting the stories of 91 soldiers from West Vancouver whose names are inscribed on the Memorial Park Cenotaph. Developed in partnership with West Vancouver Schools and the Royal Canadian Legion, this project brings their legacy to life through original documents, photographs, and service records.
