West Vancouver Memorial Library Board Pays Tribute to Retiring Library Director

West Vancouver, B.C. – The West Vancouver Memorial Library Board of Trustees announced today that after nearly nine years of service Library Director Jenny Benedict is retiring from West Vancouver Memorial Library on July 12, 2019.

Jenny’s term with the Library has been marked by tremendous achievements including the opening of the upgraded West Wing, the introduction of innovative programming and the expansion of digital learning. Jenny has actively supported community initiatives including Remembrance Day services, initiatives honouring Reconciliation with First Nations Peoples and cultural celebrations such as the Lantern Festival. Under her leadership, the Library has secured its place at the heart of the community and as a place open and welcoming to all.

Jenny has played a leadership role in the family of British Columbia Libraries where she has been a tireless advocate for the advancement of public libraries in the province and beyond.

Earlier this year Jenny received the Association of BC Public Library Directors Award of Excellence in recognition of her outstanding leadership in library advocacy, innovation, and contribution to the library community.

Jenny leaves a legacy of innovation and a culture of excellence, and we are grateful for her service. She will take a brief sabbatical but will continue to be active in her community as an advisor, strategist, consultant and author. We wish her all the best in her future endeavours.

The Library will operate under Acting Director, Pat Cumming, who has been Head of Customer & Community Experience. The Board has full confidence in Ms. Cumming and the extraordinary and highly dedicated staff, many of whom have served the Library for years. Ms. Benedict and the Board are working closely with Library and District staff to oversee a smooth transition.

The Board will launch an executive search for a permanent director, and we are confident that our Library will attract strong candidates.

The Board will mark Ms. Benedict’s retirement in early July with an opportunity for the community and staff to express appreciation for her service.
