West Vancouver, B.C.— The West Vancouver Memorial Library (WVML) invites aspiring singer-songwriters, composers, musicians, and producers to apply for an exciting three-month paid musical residency program as their Sound Artist in Residence starting in mid-August 2024.
Patricia Lesku, the dynamic force behind WVML’s digital experiences, shares her enthusiasm for this program: “Ultimately, we want to take something that seems complex and daunting to new users and make it feel like something they can do. We have an exceptional Recording Studio at our Library with carefully selected gear, and we want to maximize the way people can use it while ensuring established artists have a chance to use it and share their expertise.”
The program revolves around the Library’s new Recording Studio, which provides musicians, producers, podcasters, voice actors, and the public access to premium recording equipment, a sound booth, a live room, and professional audio editing software. The successful applicant will also have access to the Library’s grand and electric pianos to craft their next masterpiece.
This full-time, three-month contract offers a $12,000 stipend and requires 50 percent of the Artist’s time be spent on Library programs, projects, and preparation; leaving 50 percent of the residency time available for working on their own self-directed creations.
As the May 19 deadline approaches, applicants are encouraged to showcase their experience and vision for community engagement with two music samples from the past 24 months.
“We’re looking for an artist at the early stages of a project with a skillset to share, as well as the passion and enthusiasm and know-how to share it,” Lesku says. “We’re looking for somebody who wants to make not only music, but also make connections.”
The Library is committed to centering Indigenous voices and leadership in the artistic community and strongly encourages artists who self-identify as Indigenous to apply.
