If you have visited the Library in the last few months, you might have noticed a big white plastic sheet hiding some exciting changes on our Main Floor. We are thrilled to announce that the Help Desk renovation project is now complete.
The Help Desk and Holds shelves have been relocated to a new spot across from the Library’s Main Floor self-checkout desks. The public art piece Panel of Knowledge: Tyee Salmon and Eulachon, previously displayed in the McDonald Creek Room, has a new and more prominent home beside the Help Desk.
Evolving to meet the needs of our patrons
Our goal with this renovation has been to create a more intuitive customer service experience for our patrons. The new location will also make the Main Hall more welcoming, spacious, and comfortable. Moving the desk to its new location freed up space to host more people at our popular Friday Night Concerts and offered new casual seating, room for more book displays, and eight new individual study carrels in the West Wing.
WVML Board Chair Tracy Wachmann and Council Representative Sharon Thompson helped cut the ribbon to open the new desk on Wednesday, December 13. Wachmann said, “This renovation transforms how our community will experience the Library and is a perfect example of a smart and efficient space planning move that respects and maximizes existing infrastructure.”
Overall, the patron feedback about the new Help Desk location has been highly positive over the past five days it has been open. A long-time patron said, “I can’t get over how great the new Help Desk looks. It’s like a completely different library now.” Another commented, “… the new Help Desk location is spacious, accessible, and gorgeous, and it was worth waiting for!'”
