West Vancouver, B.C.— Have you attended a Friday Night Concert at the West Van Library before? Joined a talk with authors like Michelle Good, Raffi, or Jody Wilson-Raybould? Enjoyed technology classes in The Lab? These are all made possible thanks to the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation, and they are holding a fundraising event on November 3 to ensure this level of support for the Library’s enhanced offerings can continue.
On November 3 at the Kay Meek Arts Centre, Stephanie Hall, West Vancouver Memorial Library’s Director, will host A Conversation with Beverley McLachlin: Her Journey through Life and Law at the Kay Meek Arts Centre. They will talk about Ms. McLachlin’s early years, her love of libraries, her writing, and, of course, her extensive legal career, including her days as a teacher of evidence at the UBC law school, her 28 years on the Supreme Court, and her current role on Hong Kong’s Court of Final Appeal.
WVML Director Stephanie Hall says, “In Beverley McLachlin’s memoir, she states that the Pincher Creek Municipal Library saved her life. She goes on to say, ‘Would I have grown up to be the person I am now without it? Most certainly not.’ Ms. McLachlin’s love of libraries and her late blooming career as a writer and novelist made her an ideal speaker for our event.”
Beverley McLachlin is the #1 bestselling author of two novels, Full Disclosure and Denial, and a memoir, Truth Be Told, which won the prestigious Writers’ Trust Shaughnessy Cohen Prize and the Ottawa Book Award for Nonfiction. From 2000 to 2017, McLachlin was Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Canada. She is the first woman to hold that position and the longest-serving Chief Justice in Canadian history. In 2018, McLachlin became a Companion of the Order of Canada, the highest honour within the Order.
WVML Foundation Chair Heather Kaart adds, “This is our first major fundraising event in three years, as we work to fund equity-enhancing supports and educational opportunities that have a direct impact on individuals at the point of need and the social fabric of our community as a whole. Our library is known for its inclusive, diverse offerings, and your support at this fundraising event will ensure that can continue.”
Tickets are on sale on the Kay Meek website. 32Books & Gallery will provide books for Ms. McLachlin to autograph after the event.
Sponsored by British Pacific Properties, Grosvenor, Lawson Lundell LLP, Roper Greyell LLP, Westerleigh Parc, Leith Wheeler, and North Shore News.
About the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation
The West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation was incorporated in 1986 by a group of committed citizens to serve as an avenue through which private and public donors could partner in a legacy of giving and support for the West Vancouver Memorial Library.
As an incorporated, not-for-profit society, the Foundation raises funds and administers endowments, donations, and bequests for the Library. The Foundation annually gives funds to the Library to provide collections, programs and enhancements to technology and spaces, that go further than could be achieved through District funding alone. These enhancements contribute to West Vancouver Memorial Library’s reputation for innovation and excellence.
