Art Talks: Who’s Your Daddy? with Guest Curator, Maya Rodrigo-Abdi [VIRTUAL]
Thursday, February 15 at 7 p.m.–8 p.m.Free
Join West Vancouver Art Museum Guest Curator, Maya Rodrigo-Abdi in a conversation with artists Kiana Shahnia and Roselynn Sadaghiani.
This Art Talk is a partnership with the West Vancouver Art Museum, presenting Who’s Your Daddy?: Inherited Topographies and Other Familiar Accumulations, on display from January 24 to March 2.
The exhibition will engage with topics surrounding archival environments, crossed borders, extracted resources, mother country manifestations, and additional leftovers from home. One of the primary curatorial objectives for this project is to increase awareness about the importance of records and artworks situated in West Vancouver’s municipal archives and engage with the relevance of these collections to contemporary artistic discourse. By sharing this space with artists who have grown up and remain connected to the North Shore, this exhibit aims to bridge gaps between and increase access to diverse histories.
Maya Rodrigo-Abdi is an emerging art historian, curator, and artist from North Vancouver. She is currently completing her Master of Arts degree in Critical and Curatorial Studies at the University of British Columbia. In her work, Maya aims to develop alternative artistic engagement and display methods to resist the commodification of identity in Canadian art spaces. She centres her practice on themes related to historical constructions of national landscapes, the marking of time via moments in contemporary popular culture, and her lived experiences as a mixed woman of colour. Her most recent projects have been programmed through the Art Gallery of Ontario, Hatch Art Gallery, and Audain Art Centre.
