Montreal-based cello virtuoso Elinor Frey will be joined by cellist Josephine van Lier and harpsichordist Christina Hutten for an evening of Italian Baroque music. You will hear compositions by Antonio Vivaldi, Benedetto Marcello, Luigi Boccherini, and Giuseppe Clemente Dall’Abaco, performed alongside J.S. Bach’s Italianate cello suite.
Elinor Frey is the artistic director of Accademia de’ Dissonanti, an organization for performance and research. She has performed throughout the Americas and in Europe in recitals and with numerous chamber ensembles and orchestras (Rosa Barocca, Constantinople, Les idées heureuses, Il Gardellino, Tafelmusik, Pacific Baroque Orchestra, etc.). Recipient of dozens of grants and prizes supporting performance and research, including the US-Italy Fulbright Fellowship (studying with Paolo Beschi in Como, Italy) and a recent research residency at the Orpheus Institute in Ghent, Elinor holds degrees from McGill, Mannes, and Juilliard. She teaches Baroque cello and performance practice at McGill University and the Université de Montréal and is a Visiting Fellow in Music (2020–2023) at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford University. Frey was awarded Québec’s Opus Prize for “Performer of the Year” in 2021.
Josephine Van Lier is a Dutch cellist and viola da gambist who has called Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, her home since 1995. Born with an insatiable passion for music and a profound dedication to historically informed performance practice, Josephine has built a remarkable career encompassing both the “traditional” classical and early worlds of music. Beyond her performance career, Josephine van Lier is also a driving force in the world of early music. She is the founder and artistic director of Early Music Alberta, an organization dedicated to promoting and fostering historically informed performance practices.
Organist and harpsichordist Christina Hutten has presented recitals in Canada, the United States, and Europe, including performances in concert series hosted by the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, the Hooglandsekerk in Leiden, Early Music Vancouver, the Universities of British Columbia and Calgary, and others. She performs regularly with the Pacific Baroque Orchestra. She has appeared as a concerto soloist with the Okanagan Symphony, the Vancouver Academy of Music Symphony Orchestra, and the Arizona State University Chamber Orchestra. Christina is also an enthusiastic teacher.
Library concerts are made possible thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Robert Leslie Welsh. This fall’s concert series is sponsored by Amica West Vancouver and British Pacific Properties through the WVML Foundation.
