Gain a deeper understanding of the music you love through insightful lectures by entertaining and knowledgeable speakers, stimulating discussions, and some great on-screen performances. This series is made possible thanks to a generous bequest in support of music at the Library from the estate of Robert Leslie Welsh, through the West Vancouver Memorial Library Foundation.
Join longtime CBC producer Neil Ritchie as he celebrates the unique styles of different artists from the worlds of film, opera, jazz and more.
September 14 – Elvis Presley
Whether you judge him a success or failure, he had one of the most unique careers and personal lives in pop music.
September 21 – Twyla Tharp
A choreographer who continues to create as she nears 90. She took dance in new directions, embracing her love of all kinds of music, and staged some memorable movie musicals.
September 28 – Juan Diego Florez
This 48-year-old Peruvian tenor caused a sensation in the opera world with his effortless high Cs. He continues to explore new opera roles and presents concerts showing his love and mastery of Latin pop music.
October 5 – Underappreciated Artists
An introduction to several artists who despite their enormous talent have never become mainstream stars. Among them are singers/actors Madeline Kahn, Kim Kriswell, Ledisi, Brian Stokes Mitchell, and Patrick Wilson, and pianists Eleana Elias and Igor Levit.
October 12 – Franco Zeffirelli
Zeffirelli died in 2019 at the age of 96. In the opera world he was renowned for coaching Maria Callas and Joan Sutherland and designing the most spectacular opera productions for all the major companies. In his film career he directed a dozen Hollywood films, most notably his adaptations of Shakespeare including The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet and Hamlet.
