Music Lecture Series: Jazz and Holiday Classics [VIRTUAL]

Gain a deeper understanding of the music you love through insightful lectures by entertaining and knowledgeable speakers, stimulating discussions, and some great on-screen performances.

- November 18: Ella in Hamburg with Neil Ritchie
Ella in Hamburg was recorded in 1965 when Ella Fitzgerald was 48 years old and at the peak of her career. Neil will explore the vocal range and dynamic conversation had between Fitzgerald and the Tommy Flanagan Trio on this live recorded album, in addition to how and why Fitzgerald became know as the First Lady of Song.
- November 25: Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker with VSO Associate Conductor, Andrew Crust
Enjoy a musical and historical tour of Tchaikovsky’s iconic Nutcracker Ballet, in an exploration of the ballet’s context, history, music, as well as insights Crust has gained from conducting the work in the pit on numerous occasions, with audio and visual examples.
- December 2: Handel’s Messiah with Nicolas Krusek
Gain a deeper appreciation for Handel’s Messiah by exploring the work’s historical background and the circumstances surrounding its composition and first performances. Our discussion of the text and music will clarify the overall structure of this oratorio while also shedding light on Handel’s expressive use of word painting.
- December 9: Night Train by the Oscar Peterson Trio, with two-time Juno nominated bassist and composer, Jodi Proznick
Join Jodi as she takes you on a guided listening adventure of the iconic jazz album Night Train by the legendary Canadian pianist Oscar Peterson featuring Ray Brown on bass and Ed Thigpen on drums.
