Indigenous Cinema: Chaakapesh [VIRTUAL]
Thursday, September 30 at 2 p.m.–4:30 p.m.Free
The Federal Government and the Province of BC have declared September 30 National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and they are asking each of us “to advance reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and to recommit to understanding the truth of our shared history, to accept and learn from it and in doing so, help to create a better, more inclusive British Columbia.”
In observation of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, we present the film Chaakapesh, written by Tomson Highway, composed by Matthew Ricketts, and performed in the fall of 2018 by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montreal (OSM). The opera, under the direction of Kent Nagano, tells the story of Chaakapesh, a trickster who sets out to stop the massacre of his people by white settlers through teaching these settlers to laugh. Sung in Cree and narrated in Innu, Cree, and Inuktitut, Chaakapesh represents a powerful collaboration between the OSM and Indigenous artists and communities. The orchestra traveled to Quebec’s Far North marking the first time they have performed in Cree and Innu territory. Far more than just a concert film, Chaakapesh puts the audience front row centre as Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities come together in intercultural collaboration.
