Food for Thought: Gardening for Life with Joanna Wilke [VIRTUAL]
Saturday, May 14 at 11 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Free
With a rapidly changing world and increasingly uncertain times, practical skills in the garden and kitchen are helpful, cost-effective, sustainable, and exciting! We’ll consider the importance of involving every generation in finding ways to re-connect to nature to benefit our brains and bodies. Is it possible to grow a meaningful amount of food in just a small city lot, patio, apartment balcony, or indoor space? The resounding answer is YES! Come and explore the possibilities with Joanna Wilke, mother of three hungry teenagers who actually enjoy eating kale and microgreens.
About Joanna Wilke
Growing up in a family that enjoyed camping and other outdoor activities, and witnessing first-hand her grandparents’ passion for gardening, growing their own food, and their resourcefulness, Joanna formed a natural affinity to foraging, gardening, and cooking from a young age. These have proven to be a lasting source of pleasure and relaxation throughout her life and have woven together with a career in music and teaching. Homeschooling her own three children for eight years aided her in curriculum planning when she developed a gardening and nutrition program at a local elementary school. Alongside teaching music and the Garden Buddy Program, Joanna teaches online gardening and nutrition classes entitled Return to Roots through the B.C. Brain Wellness Program at UBC. She and her family continue to enjoy hundreds of kilos of fresh produce each year grown on their 33’ x 122’ Vancouver lot.
For this virtual program, we’ll be using Zoom. We will email you the Zoom link 24 hours in advance of the program.
What you’ll need: A computer with speakers (or headphones) or your smartphone or tablet.
