Join Dr. Melissa Lem in conversation with Dr. Kaylee Byers as they discuss how climate change is affecting your well-being and how connecting with nature can improve your health.
This is the second event of WVML’s Big Ideas lecture series.
Dr. Melissa Lem is a Vancouver family physician, President-Elect of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, and Director of PaRx, Canada’s national nature prescription program powered by the BC Parks Foundation. An internationally recognized expert on the nature-health connection, she has also engaged in advocacy and policy work on a broad range of other issues, from climate change and hydraulic fracturing to sustainable health care and low-carbon transportation.
A senior writer for the CBC, she was the resident medical expert on CBC TV’s hit show Steven and Chris for four seasons, and continues as a regular contributor to CBC Radio’s Early Edition and CTV News. Dr. Lem was the inaugural winner of University College’s Young Alumni of Influence Award at the University of Toronto, a 2021 World Parks Week Ambassador, and is a Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia.
Dr. Kaylee Byers (she/her; @kaylee_byers) is a One Health scientist and health communications researcher investigating innovative ways to improve the health of people, wildlife, and ecosystems. She is the Deputy Director of the British Columbia Node of the Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative and a University Research Associate at Simon Fraser University. For the past decade she has been an active science communicator, co-founding the science seminar series Nerd Nite Vancouver and its spin-off podcast Nerdin’ About. When she isn’t thinking about or talking about science, you can find her paddleboarding, knitting in a hammock, or brainstorming her next pun.
