Jenny Benedict, Director of Library Services, WVMLMay 2016 - Director of Library Services Jenny Benedict was appointed Chair of of the Association of BC Public Library Directors for 2016/2017. 

 

BC Library Association 2015 Conference

May 2015 - Pat Cumming,Head of Information Services, participated in a Both Sides Now, a podcast and panel discussion about the intersection of librarians and library technicians.

 

 

WVML Publication in Leading Professional Journal

January 2015 - Deputy Director Deb Hutchison Koep and Digital Access Librarian Sarah Felkar's article: Take Our Data-Driven Approach to Staff Technology Training was published in the January/February 2015 issue of the journal Computers in LIbraries.

 

The Library in the Digital Marketplace: Stategies for our Future

Jenny BenedictOctober 2014 - Director of Library Services Jenny Benedict and Web Strategist Emira Mears gave a presentation on how libraries are learning to position themselves online in their communities at the Alberta Libraries Netspeed Conference in Edmonton. An article was published in the BCLA Browser, Volume 6, no.4.

 

 

Danielle WingWVML Pilots “Easy as Pi” Digital Literacy Program with UBC iSchool

August 2014 – Danielle Wing, a Student Librarian with West Vancouver Memorial Library, partnered with UBC’s School of Library, Archival and Information Studies (iSchool) on a pilot project to teach children the basics of computational thinking using the Raspberry Pi microcomputer. The Library presented on “Easy as Pi” at the BCLA and CLA conferences in spring 2014 and had an article published in Volume 6, no. 3 of the BCLA Browser. Interest and response to the program has been overwhelmingly positive.

July 2014 - Information Department Librarian Tara Matsuzaki is the Co-Chair of the British Columbia Library Association's Readers' Advisory Interest Group, which promotes and facilitates innovation in readers' advisory services across BC.

For the second year in a row, West Vancouver Memorial Library (WVML) has won two Best of Show Awards in the annual American Library Association’s (ALA) PR Xchange competition. June 2014 – For the second year in a row, WVML has won two Best of Show Awards in the annual American Library Association's (ALA) PR Xchange competition. Our Website Takeaways won in the category of Patron Orientation/Policy Materials (print) and our Music Playlists tied for the award of Materials Promoting Collections (print). WVML's entries were chosen from nearly 350 print and electronic pieces submitted in 10 categories from public, academic, school, state and special libraries across North America. Entries were appraised on the quality of content, design and originality.

Sarah Felkar appointed Chair of B.C. Libraries Cooperative Licensing Function Group

June, 2014 – Sarah Felkar, Digital Access Librarian, is the Chair Elect for the (BC) Licensing Business Function Group of the BC Libraries Cooperative. This group works collaboratively to review, select, implement and improve digital resources and services across the province. Sarah was appointed by acclamation at the Co-op's AGM on Friday, June. 

 

Kay Weisman elected to Association for Library Service to Children's Board

May, 2014 – Congratulations to casual youth Librarian Kay Weisman, who has been elected to ALA's Association for Library Service to Children's (ALSC's) Board of Directors effective until 2017. Kay was a teacher-librarian for thirty years before receiving her Master of Arts in Children's Literature from UBC in 2012. She has sat on the Newbery Award Committee, reviews for Booklist and writes a monthly non-fiction column for School Library Monthly. We are fortunate to have Kay on the WVML team.

May, 2014 – Digital Access Librarian Sarah Felkar was elected to a two-year term as Director for the BC Library Association. Sarah's past experience as both a Library Assistant and a Librarian, together with her enthusiastic commitment to continuous learning and professional development have provided her with an excellent foundation for this position.

April 2, 2014 – Youth Department Head Shannon Ozirny and Digital Access Librarian Sarah Felkar gave presentations at two sessions at the 2014 British Columbia Library Conference. "New Century, New Acronym: Technology Advisory (TA) For Youth", presented with staff from North Vancouver City and Surrey Public Libraries, focused on using embedded technology, community connections and the expertise of young patrons to offer technology programs and services in the 21st century learning environment. They also presented at "Oh, Glorious Failures! Lightning Talks on How to Succeed Through Failure," one of the best-attended sessions of the conference.

October 2013 – Head of Youth Services Shannon Ozirny's article "App Advisory for Youth and the Creation of wvmlyouth.tumblr.com" appears in the October 2013 issue of Feliciter (vol. 59, issue no. 5). 

 

American Library Association Appointment

June 2013 – Library Director Jenny Benedict has been appointed as the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) representative to the American Library Association Advocacy Coordinating Group for 2013-2014.

 

Library Receives Best of Show Awards

June 2013 – The West Vancouver Memorial Library received awards for two innovative public relations pieces: the Advocacy award for the Library Storybook and the "Special Programs/Exhibits/Events (Print)" award for the North Shore Writers Festival.

 

Youth Department Head Shannon Ozirny Invited to Predict the Future

May 2013 – Shannon Ozirny, Head of Youth Services, was invited to be part of a BC Library Conference panel entitled "Looking Down the Road at Children's and Teen Services" with Julia Iannacone (Vancouver Public Library) and Vicki Donoghue (Burnaby Public Library). Shannon’s presentation focused on the impact technology will have on youth services in the coming years.

 

Library Staff Offer Tips on Technology Training at BC Library Conference

May 2013 – Sarah Felkar, Digital Access Librarian, and Deb Hutchison Koep, Deputy Director, gave a presentation to over 80 conference attendees on the technology skills survey they developed and implemented for WVML and the innovative staff technology training program they have launched as a result.

 

Librarian Julie Backer Writes Chapter for Award-Winning Book

May 2013 – The book Greening Libraries, which contains a chapter on green practices at WVML by librarian Julie Backer, was a recent winner in the Business Book section at the 2013 Green Book Festival.

 

Library Board Chair Kirsty Farquharson Represents Library on Conference Panel

May 2013 – WVML Board Chair Kirsty Farquharson shared her wisdom and plain-spoken advice on “Making the Most of the Chief Librarian and Board of Trustees Relationship” during the 2013 BC Library Conference.
